POTTERY: At college, while training for a B.Ed, I met David Leach, the eldest son of Bernard Leach, the father of English studio pottery. David admired his father's intuitive, evolutionary development of forms and how they were glazed. David taught me to make glazes using organic material rather than chemicals and now I source the local clays of Herefordshire and the Forest of Dean which interact with my own celadon glazes. I decorate with oxides, wax, and leaf resist, especially oak, silver birch or ginkgo. I like to make items for use in everyday life, at accessible prices, whether kitchen- or table-ware, or for decoration, and which often incorporate animal or human figurines. I also make wild and domestic animal sculptures and specific human figurines such as musicians plus conversation pieces called Buddy Benches.
Personal tuition by arrangement: particularly throwing but also slab work.
PAINTING: My landscapes are inspired by our local Welsh Marches, rich in my preferred subject matter: skies, hills, rivers, mills, churches, and animals, particularly horses and cattle. I paint figuratively on canvas or heavy paper with acrylics and oils, using keyed-up earth colours. For me, the artistic experience is a profoundly spiritual encounter with what I see and touch, thus an intuitive harmony exists between my interpretation of the mood of the landscape and my choice of colours.
My practice is firstly to absorb the present moment, to immerse myself in it, sketching and photographing the scene from may viewpoints, watching how weather patterns change to affect the play of light around solid forms, making them more diffuse. At home I configure the salient elements within the composition and plan it out with broad washes of solid colour. Then comes the making, the constant handling of brushes, obeying colour combinations, creating the illusion of 3-dimensional forms on a 2-dimensional surface. Regularly standing back to contemplate, to perceive the whole. Behind my closed door, in silence or with music, my peace is entire. Finally, it’s for others to see, to engage with and maybe take home – for me, dispossession.
