Priddis Pottery + Fine Art
I studied ceramics with Harry Stringer and David Leach, who taught me the science of glaze-making using organic material rather than chemicals. I particularly enjoy using local clay slips which are found all over our area, including the Forest and the upper reaches of the Severn estuary. These interact with my own celadon glazes which are inspired by 16th Century Korean refugee potters in Japan. I make oxidised stoneware, both functional and decorative. I like to make items that can be used in everyday life, whether kitchen or table ware or for decoration, at accessible prices. I decorate with oxides, wax, impressed designs or leaf resist, especially English oak, and I often incorporate animal or human figurines as knobs. I also make wild and domestic animal sculptures and specific human figurines such as musicians plus conversation pieces which I call Buddy Benches.
I've painted all my life and I am inspired by our local countryside which is rich in my preferred subject matter: hills, rivers and streams, and old buildings, such as disused or converted mills or country churches. I work on canvas or heavy paper using acrylics, oils, watercolour and pastels, and the earth colours of my palette are similar to my glaze colours.
For me, the experience of being an artist means always having a close encounter with the environment, either above or below ground!
I offer personal tuition by arrangement, both in clay work, particularly throwing but also slab pots, and 1:1 painting and drawing sessions.
