Abstractsion - Sam Wilkins
Sam lives and works from her studio in Gloucestershire. She paints abstract pieces and semi-abstract landscapes based on her observations of trees and water in landscapes she has encountered on her travels both at home and abroad. Many of her pieces are based on walks she frequently takes in the Forest of Dean and the Cotswolds.
Predominantly using acrylic paint she makes additional marks in charcoal, acrylic pen or scraping the surface with different tools. She has however recently started using oil paint in her work and is enjoying this immensely- the medium allowing a greater flexibility in mixing on the canvas and giving richer, more vibrant hues. Due to currently suffering with a frozen shoulder she has adapted her way of working to still allow her to paint. This involves her often working on smaller pieces and lowering her canvas on her easel.
Her observations frequently have a mathematical aspect to them and she looks for the geometry in the shapes before her, blocking out these shapes, finding patterns, playing with negative space and a trying to find that delicate equilibrium, similar to an algebraic equation, that balances colour, texture and form for a pleasing outcome.
It is her background in mathematics that makes her work, particularly the composition, so aesthetically pleasing. She says of her experience of art and maths:
“There is so much beauty in our natural world -Mathematics gives us the language to explain much of this wonder and Art allows us to convey our own visions of it.”
