Naturally dyed in her studio, Annabel creates yarns and textiles on a slow and small scale. She is passionate about natural dyes when crafting textiles, gathering plants from the riverside to extract colour and finding inspiration in the untamed nature of The Forest of Dean is boundless – “my connection with the process is quiet and careful. I love producing naturally dyed textiles and yarns with minimal environmental impact that are useful and beautiful.”
Annabel studied at Chelsea College of Art & Design and Bath School of Art, where she specialised in Woven Textiles. After practising as a hand weaver and working in the arts and health charity sector, Annabel missed the process of creating a material she had discovered at art school and found herself drawn to the tactility of dyeing. Hand dyeing with plant material felt like the antithesis of an industrialised textile industry: traditional, uncool, everlasting.
Over time, Annabel Williams has become a studio practice that has included exhibitions, collaborations, teaching, shop partners and a loyal customer base.
She recently settled with her husband and their young daughter in the Forest of Dean.
