Graham Wilde
My art is both representational and abstract dependent on whichever theme I am exploring or what seems appropriate for the subject. I prefer to work with oils on canvas most of all, although, I do make blockprints and use watercolours.
Living overlooking the River Severn I find inspiration from the changing colours, moods and atmospheres occurring through the year.
Byzantine art and architecture have fascinated and inspired me to make paintings and prints using modern iconographical interpretations and invent scenarios to tell visual stories.
We have all been affected by Lockdown. 2020 enabled me to explore new possibilities in my art. This year I will be exhibiting some new large abstracts on canvas. These paintings evolved through isolation rather than being planned in the usual way which was a new way of working for me. The colours are strong and the imagery bold but there are subtleties in there too. It was easy to get absorbed and lost inside the paintings. Instead of drawing from inspirational things around me these works are from inside my own head and in the making, took on a life of their own. This gave me the opportunity to explore my imagination - a gift in such straightened times.
