Harriet Hughes
My work spans many mediums including hand built ceramics, analogue photographic work, painting, printmaking, film and textile work. It explores different aspects of the female experience- recently using dolls as a symbol for these explorations. Recent projects include “Looks good, Feels great” Where the relationship between women and consumerism is explored via imagery of magazines and scissors, and a ceramics collection exploring motherhood and unpaid labour- one piece being a dish with rows and rows of hand painted tally marks to represent the hours of domestic labour which have been ignored and expected of women.
Harriet Hughes is a fine artist who studied at Hereford College of Arts. She is living in Drybrook beginning a studio practice after some current and previous opportunities including; being chosen for Tate Collectives “life between islands” Open call, Glossy’s “sisterhood is still powerful” exhibit and collaborating with Darragh Hewatt for a new Thermomotor design alongside working with Hundred Heroines in Gloucester.
I will be displaying my work alongside two very talented makers. As I use many mediums there will be a variety on show- namely handbuilt ceramics, analogue photographic work, painting and printmaking. My work centres around the female experience, where I have come to have an affinity with imagery of dolls. I’ve also explored magazines and sewing/mending as symbols in previous projects. Recently graduated from Hereford college of arts, I currently reside in Drybrook working in my studio as well as at a gallery in Gloucester. After some great opportunities in the last few years, I am excited to share my most recent work with you!
