Jane Simmonds
I am a creative photographer living in the Forest of Dean, specialising in creating colourful artwork mostly inspired by nature. I spend many hours wandering in the woods, appreciating what Wendell Berry referred to as “the peace of wild things” and drawing inspiration for my artwork from the trees, plants and flowers I see on a daily basis.
I am drawn to a more interpretative approach with my photographic artwork- conveying an impression or an emotion is far more important to me than trying to recreate a faithful version of reality. I use in-camera techniques such as ICM (intentional camera movement) and multiple exposures (blending multiple images together) to explore the patterns, textures, shapes and colours. These techniques allow me the freedom to experiment without constraints and spark my imagination as the results are often unpredictable and lead me off in unexpected directions – a process I find both fascinating and challenging.
I also enjoy vintage camera-less processes such as cyanotype printing and lumen printing (or a combination of the two), using botanical subjects found in my garden or on my woodland walks.
My work has received numerous awards in prestigious competitions such as the International Garden Photographer of the Year.
