Maz Balaam
Maz Balaam is a ceramicist living and working in the Forest of Dean. Maz trained at Windsor Art College and the Royal Forest of Dean college, and is an active member of a local cooperative of potters based in Newnham. Maz has been strongly influenced by the forest around her, and the Welsh coast, this is reflected in her work. Her work has been exhibited at the Gardens Gallery Cheltenham and a number of local galleries.
Many of her larger pieces are built in a clay called Crank. This is an open textured, coarsely grogged clay, which can be left all year round in the garden due to its robustness. The smaller pieces, often with imprints of botanicals found in the Forest of Dean and pieces found on the coast, are made of a white earthenware clay, for more delicate work. It is then bisque fired, and painted with oxides and pigments into the crevices, then the excess is rubbed away. This can either be left as it is, with wonderful effect, or glazed with a clear glaze to bring out the colours of the oxides. Then back into the final firing leaving the results in the lap of the kiln gods, with some interesting results, some good, and some not so good, that is the joy of working with clay.
