When I think about a place, whether I am there or not, it is not just one image that comes to mind. It is a mixture of glimpses, memories, feeling states, assumptions and associations about what could be there. As an Artist I have always been interested in trees, and the South West offers an abundance of arboreal material. In painting, trees belong to a long European tradition of nature emblems; replaying themes of death and rebirth often in arcadian landscape settings, blending pagan and christian traditions in the veneration of holy groves and sacred trees.
