Hello, friend! Thank you for taking the time to stop by. Each of us has a story. Everybody has a quirk or foible that makes them unique. We’ve all had a moment, created a memory or achieved a milestone worthy of remembrance. And who isn’t touched by a thoughtful gift that celebrates those things. That's the reason Scorched exists!
At Scorched, I design and create personalised gifts and one-off, bespoke pieces for people who want to give a special gift that evokes an emotion from a moment, a memory, or a milestone. From memory boxes and trinket boxes to wedding gifts and wall art, I work with my clients to design a piece that will make them smile! And I’ve been known to help pull clients out of the doghouse with a thoughtful gift that doesn’t scream ‘last minute’!
As well as personalised gifts, I also design and create pieces for businesses, too. This can range from a simple branded keyring to beautiful office signage, menu covers and awards and trophies. I work with the Dean Heritage Centre, Taurus Crafts, The Speech House Hotel, NMITE and The Munitions Business Lounge at the Shell Store in Hereford, to name but a few.
THE PROCESS
Everything begins life as a sketch but then I use sophisticated graphics software to redraw the design and put it into a format so that the laser can understand what I want it to do. Materials for a project are carefully selected and prepared by hand before it goes anywhere near the laser. And once the machine has done its job, each component piece is then assembled, and hand finished to my own self-imposed high standards.
I use a few different finishing processes; painting into wood is one of my favourites but I also enjoy the intricacy of inlaying veneers into wood, challenging but thoroughly rewarding. Wood is such a beautiful thing to work with. Every single piece is unique, and no two finished projects ever look the same. Each grain pattern is as individual as a fingerprint, every slice has a different story!
Wood isn’t the only material I use. Slate is also very popular, and I engrave into ceramic tiles, glass, acrylic and leather. Examples of all of these will be on display in my workshop.
MY OPEN STUDIO
After recently completing a refurbishment of the workshop, we now have a safe and welcoming environment in which to invite clients to come and browse, and to see how I work and everything that’s involved in bringing an idea to life.
During the OpenStudio event, and throughout the year, I will be running demonstrations that showcase an idea on paper, how that moves through the digital process, how I select and prepare materials for a project, through to the engraving, cutting and finishing of a piece. These demonstrations will take place at 11.00am and 14.00pm each day of the OpenStudio event (please check my social media for other dates throughout the year).
If you would like to have a piece made for you, and get involved with its creation during the event, please email me a couple of weeks before the event so we can discuss your idea!
