Kiln formed glass and mixed media
Lockdown walks are invigorating and inspirational. Striding through the woods I look, I see, I feel, I question. “What would that look like if it was made from glass?” I challenge myself to translate observation into vitreous transparency. Light passes through and bounces off glass revealing a magical honesty.
The creative process is a puzzle and a challenge. How can I transform an idea into an artwork? I often start, then walk away for a while, rethinking concepts and revising the strategy for working with this unforgiving material, convincing myself that it won’t matter so much if I progress to the next stage and it goes wrong in the kiln. Sometimes I get asked, “How’s your glass going?” or it is suggested that “you haven’t ‘done’ much glass recently,” as if I have to produce something tangible. That’s pressure.
Actually, I think about it a great deal. Creativity is a thought process as well as a practice but there is an expectation of an output. Back to my walks. I cherish being outside and am happy to live where I live in the Forest of Dean. My art is the product of an entanglement of life and a creative imagination.
