Steve Freer
I initially studied painting at art college but never pursued it as a career, instead becoming a documentary film director and producer making arts and music programmes for the BBC.
I first started making ceramics at an evening class in Ross-on-Wye as a way of reconnecting with my younger self and soon became hooked. I now have my own small studio and am a member of CUP ceramics in Hereford, an open access workshop which brings together potters from across the county. I have also completed an MA in Contemporary Craft at Hereford College of Arts.
My work falls into two parts. I make mugs, vases and bowls which are thrown on a pottery wheel and are then decorated with combinations of different glazes. I enjoy producing work that can be used but is also beautiful to look at, I love the way in which the glazes blend with each other to create unexpected patterns, no two pots will be the same.
I’m also interested in putting images onto ceramics. I use a range of different techniques including mono printing and screen printing. This enables me to decorate large slab-built forms with multiple images which float in and out of the glazes.
I’ve been making ceramics since 2013 and still find it endlessly fascinating. There’s so much to learn and so many techniques to try and get right.
