Sue Murphy

I paint and draw because I enjoy doing it. After a career in medicine and the associated pressures it was a pleasure to find something that completely occupied my mind and challenged me. I had never done any art before but tried painting whilst recovering from surgery and was hooked. Since then I have done lots of short courses with talented local artists and one longer course, a Diploma with Norfolk Painting School learning to paint with oils.

My subjects initially were always landscapes then still life & flowers in watercolour but I have learned so much from doing ‘after the masters’ paintings following in the footsteps of previous generations of famous artists to expand my subject matter and skills. i have discovered a love of painting wildlife, chiefly owls in pastels as well as expanding into landscapes in pastels. And I am intrigued by the challenge of painting portraits which I am doing mainly in charcoal. The physicality of using oil paints still appeals and I am still experimenting with techniques to add texture and interest to my work.
