We are delighted to announce the Spring Art Exhibition at Canwood Gallery & Sculpture Garden, showcasing a wide variety of artwork from farOpen artists who are exhibiting alongside Canwood’s permanent art collection that boasts world leading artists.
Open May 2nd-26th, Thursdays - Sundays 11am -4pm. Free entry, free parking, accessible. Gallery, Café & Sculpture Park
Unlike any venue farOpen have exhibited at before, the vast space of the turbine hall offers a unique opportunity to exhibit larger pieces of work and sculpture from members as never before! So if you’ve been looking to buy a statement piece for your home, garden or workplace, please visit! Plus there’ll be plenty of smaller artwork, gifts, homeware and cards to choose from.
Signs will help guide you to the venue.
In the main gallery you'll find Pierre Williams exhibiting his paintings and sculptures downstairs. Upstairs is the permanent Canwood Collection where the bricks by the godfather of contemporary art Carl Andre are displayed. Sadly he died in January this year but these are special pieces to the Gallery as Carl's bricks are the reason they opened. Also upstairs are pieces by Barbara Hepworth, Tracey Emin, Anthony Wishall, Tomokazu Matsuyma (Matzu), Nicole Farhi, Walenty Pytel, Damien Hirst and Jonty Hurwitz.
The sculpture trail boasts dozens of sculptures to explore, set in the picturesque rolling hills that surround the gallery. A firm favourite is the stunning sculpture by Angela Connor called 'Revelation' - where the outer ‘petals’ open and close, revealing the golden globe within.
In the turbine hall is the farOpen exhibition, featuring 45 different artists.

The history of Canwood as told by Hannah Dale
Canwood is an unusual gallery we are the only gallery in Herefordshire and the surrounding counties with a permanent art collection that can boost world leading artists such as Carl Andre, Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Tomokszu Matsuyama, Jonty Hurwitz, Barbara Hepworth, Nicola Farhi and Peter Sellers.
We also have an unusual backstory:-
Canwood Gallery backstory
Canwood Gallery is a non-for-profit gallery set up with the goal of exhibiting thought provoking art within the beautiful and inspiring countryside of Herefordshire.
In the 1970s the gallery owner, then a farmer, became critically ill with leukaemia, and was sent down to Bart’s hospital in London to take part in a medical trial as a last ditch attempt to try and save his life. In between some pretty severe treatments, including radiation and mustard gas among many others, he decided to venture out and took a black cab and asked where he could go to see something different. The driver took him to the Tate and refused to take any fee. Upon walking into the Tate the first thing he saw and found great inspiration in was the controversial Carl Andre bricks. It was the first of many visits. Whether it was the inspiration from art or the treatment, or both, he was the only person in his batch of 12 to survive to this day.
It has always been Stephen Dale’s desire to give something back and to build a gallery in Herefordshire where people could experience incredible art for free.
